Misgendering of PBA athletes

[edit]

Fiddling with athletes these days when I noticed that several players have been misgendered as male in talk pages and included in WikiProject Women's Sport (ex. Eddie Laure, Robert Bolick, Fritz Gaston and Carlo Sharma). Is this the work of an overlooked vandal or a bug? Borgenland (talk) 17:05, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was by KiranBOT, a bot, so a bug.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 01:10, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hariboneagle927 and Borgenland: thank you for pointing out the mistakes. I was provided a list of around 4000 categories. These categories were supposed to contain articles about only women. There might have been an oversight while creating the list itself, or some men's articles might have been added to the incorrect categories. Regarding Carlo Sharmam, and Robert Bolick which are from Category:De La Salle Green Archers basketball players is for men's players, which seems to have been in the list. While Eddie Laure was assistant coach of the UST Golden Tigresses women's varsity basketball team, maybe thats why he is of interest for the women's wikiproject? Fritz Gaston is in the Category:Philippines women's national basketball team coaches. I am willing to rectify/make changes based on suggestions, but I think first we should look for the reason which caused these edits. Maybe @Hmlarson: can help. —usernamekiran (talk) 11:31, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There had been men who had coached women's sports teams in the Philippines (and probably elsewhere).
Tip for categorization for college sports teams: In the USA, the women's teams almost always have the same team nicknames as the men's teams. For example, the women's basketball team of the University of North Carolina are also the "Tar Heels", just like the men (not "Lady Tar Heels"). There are a very few exceptions. In categorization, the way to distinguish is the word "men's or "women's" in the titles.
In the Philippines, the women's teams are named after the women's counterpart of the male nickname, which is always (no exception) the primary nickname. For example, the men's basketball team of the Far Eastern University are the "Tamaraws", while the women's team are the "Lady Tamaraws". It can be creative, like "Growling Tigers/Tigresses", but mostly the word "Lady" is added, like "Knights/Lady Knights". The 2 exceptions are Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines Diliman, which are like the US teams having the same nickname regardless of sex, so it's always "Blue Eagles" and "Fighting Maroons", respectively. For categorization, the women's teams usually have the word "Lady", while the men's teams do not.
There were a series of WP:RMs about this, and the latest just ended a few days ago. See Talk:University Athletic Association of the Philippines#College sports articles naming; there had been categories that had been renamed as a result.
While men can coach women, men can't play with women (not yet), and women don't play with men (no women are good as men yet to make a team), so the player categories can be straightforward for now. Howard the Duck (talk) 23:39, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I can reverse the changes to the articles from that list. I already have the program ready. —usernamekiran (talk) 12:38, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I can only speak for projects involving the Philippines. For now there is certainly that Ateneo men’s, UP men’s and the 2 UAAP men’s are wrongly categorized. Will check the others later. Borgenland (talk) 12:41, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Jeez Category talk:UAAP men's basketball tournaments was tagged as women's sport when the category title itself mentions men. All Adamson, Ateneo, La Salle, FEU, NU, UE and UST categories were also wrongly tagged.
Interestingly, the NCAA (Philippines) teams may not have been affected. I checked Category talk:Letran Knights basketball players and there were no women's sports project link.
Category:Kentucky State Thorobrettes basketball is a women's team; the men's team are the Category:Kentucky State Thorobreds basketball, an example of Philippine-style naming in the USA.
The other categories seem to be sports teams and competitions from other countries and someone else should make a judgment on those. Howard the Duck (talk) 23:47, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Second ladies and second gentleman

[edit]

Please check the Categories for deltion for Second ladies and gentlemen of the Philippines it has been an impasse and would probably benefit for or against deletion of said category.05:11, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

This is ridiculous, the discussion closed in a no consensus. Alas Wikipedia retains a hoax of a category.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 04:39, 6 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rappler.com

[edit]

Is there anyone from this WikiProject capable of accessing this article posted to Rapper.com. The article is given as the source for File:SM City Caloocan Interior.webp, but registration is required to see the full article. The few images that I can see aren't licensed the same way as the uploaded file, which makes me wonder whether license chosen by the uploader is correct. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:43, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Marchjuly: I can access the article without registration. I see the image, with the same caption and author. It does not have a free license declaration. Chlod (say hi!) 01:58, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Template:WikiProject Tambayan Philippines Edit request to accommodate Philippine music task force

[edit]

Hi there, I’d like to bring to your attention the WikiProject talk banner template. I'd like to add the Philippine music task force to sort those under the task force's scope. I’ve already made an edit request on the template’s talk page since it is template-protected. I’m hoping an admin or a template editor can make the necessary changes to accommodate the newly established Philippine music task force. Thanks in advance! – Relayed (t • c) 08:54, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Done. See Template talk:WikiProject Tambayan Philippines#Edit request 9 November 2024 for further info. Thanks! :) Chlod (say hi!) 09:21, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much, Chlod! – Relayed (t • c) 09:29, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Chlod! I have sent another edit request at the talk page of the WikiProject banner template. I was wondering if you could apply the changes for me. Thank you! – Relayed (t • c) 10:29, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Left a reply there. Please check when you have the time. Thanks! Chlod (say hi!) 10:54, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Stuck on early life...

[edit]

Hello. I have working on the Glaiza de Castro article for quite some time now, aiming for GA and eventually FA. I am now on the part where I expand the article, starting with adding an Early life section... however, I have exhausted all available reliable sources that talk about her birthdate, birthplace, family, and education.

I have checked Rappler, GMA, ABS-CBN, Inquirer, Philstar, and PEP—because CNN Philippines is no longer here, and I have found no books or academic papers about the subject.

In fact, I'm considering removing the statements about de Castro being "born January 21, 1988" in "Valenzuela, Philippines" because every source I've found online seems to have gotten them from Wikipedia (unless reliable sources can also be found on them).

Please help. I've been working on this for over a month now while I go through my responsibilities as a Grade 12 STEM student. Your contributions, help and ideas are highly appreciated. Thanks! Ramkarlo82 (talk) 08:30, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(add'l I forgot to add earlier) Are there any sources I may have missed out about de Castro's early life? It would really help if they could be found. Also, I wanted to submit the article for peer review if not for one of its guidelines that states that "Articles must be free of major cleanup barriers", which the article has (Update—acting career, BLP sources section—filmography, awards and nominations). But since I can't PR request the article, I chose to go here instead. Ramkarlo82 (talk) 08:44, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is "Glaiza de Castro" a stage name? If it is, maybe you can find sources using her birth name. Howard the Duck (talk) 11:43, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry... I have found fewer articles from reliable sources that use her birth name, "Glaiza Castro Galura", let alone talk about her early life.
But I have a development: though the birthplace is still not yet confirmed, I found an article that mentions the date "January 21" from before the article was created on September 8, 2007. However, the phrasing is unclear if it does refer to her birthday or not at all.
https://www.pep.ph/news/local/214/glaiza-de-castro-releases-self-titled-album — published on January 22, 2007, the article says "It took five years for Glaiza de Castro to release her follow-up album after she released her first album at the tender age of thirteen. Now, the girl is officially a lady after celebrating her debut on January 21 last year."
What kind of debut could have happened on January 21, 2006 (the "last year" in 2007)? I'm stumped here too... Ramkarlo82 (talk) 12:00, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For actors, it may be indeed hard to find RS on birth years, but for birthdays you can search first on social media, then confirm with an RS. Howard the Duck (talk) 12:14, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Bit of a long shot, but try say finding a Chika Minute report on her publicly celebrating a birthday then cross check with RS similar to Mx. Duck. Borgenland (talk) 13:07, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well... upon closer analysis of the PEP article, I concluded that "celebrating her debut" more likely means "celebrating [her] 18th birthday" in this context. (I know that meaning of debut as well as more universal meanings like "first appearance", but I just had to reread to ensure that not the wrong meaning is used.) I will cross check it with a better RS later.
That now leaves birthplace, family and education (and other details publicly shared). I may have indeed missed some sources that may mention them, but since I am busy with academics... this won't be my priority now. I will be welcome to any help I receive (through here, since I can't request PR as I mentioned earlier) with improving and expanding the article while I'm not that active here Ramkarlo82 (talk) 13:21, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

South China Sea Arbitration Tribunal's position on the Award

[edit]

The "Tribunal's position on the award" section of the South China Sea Arbitration contains a position of the Tribunal that appears to have been deliberately cherry-picked for emphasis. Can someone look at it and perhaps, expand and improve it? Sanglahi86 (talk) 15:00, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in Ancestral houses of the Philippines

[edit]

Hello fellow wikipedians :)

The page "Ancestral houses of the Philippines" contains many errors. The primary issue seems to be a mismatch between the title "Ancestral Houses of the Philippines" and the specific focus on "Heritage Houses" as declared by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. What could or should be the correct approach in rectifying this? Should the page be renamed "Heritage Houses of the Philippines" and focus solely on that, or should a new page be created for declared heritage houses and remove the inaccuracies from "ancestral houses of the Philippines"?
